Summary Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz announces free wheat bags worth Rs6bn and sets Rs2,500 per maund procurement price, ensuring quick payments and farmer support.

LAHORE (Dunya News) – Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced a major relief package for wheat growers, including the provision of free bardana (grain bags) worth Rs6 billion and a fixed procurement price of Rs2,500 per maund.

The decision was taken during a high-level meeting chaired by the chief minister to review wheat procurement arrangements across the province. Under the plan, registered farmers will receive 10 bags per acre from designated procurement centres to facilitate storage and transportation of wheat.

Officials also agreed in principle to prioritise purchases from farmers holding the Kisan Card, ensuring a streamlined and transparent procurement process. The government has made it mandatory for payments to be issued to farmers within 72 hours of wheat procurement at the fixed rate.

To ensure efficient oversight, strategic management committees have been established at both provincial and divisional levels. These bodies will monitor procurement operations and address any logistical or administrative challenges.

In a parallel initiative, Maryam Nawaz also launched the “Work with Punjab Government” programme, offering internship opportunities to agriculture graduates and other young professionals, aiming to strengthen the province’s agricultural sector through skilled human resources.

Speaking at the meeting, the chief minister reiterated her government’s commitment to safeguarding farmers’ interests, stating that no grower would be left unsupported. She emphasised that sustainable agricultural development remains a key priority of the provincial administration.
