Punjab to e-tag all vehicles, set up cyber crime unit and boost drone surveillance as Maryam Nawaz orders sweeping security upgrades across the province.
LAHORE (Dunya News) - The Punjab government has decided to install e-tags on all vehicles, including motorcycles, as part of enhanced permanent security measures across the province.
The decision was taken during a high-level law and order meeting chaired by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, where several key security initiatives were approved in view of the current situation.
The chief minister granted formal approval for mandatory e-tagging of bikes and other vehicles to strengthen monitoring and tracking mechanisms.
During the meeting, approval was also given for the establishment of a Punjab Cyber Crime Investigation Unit. A special cell will be set up to assist women and young girls who fall victim to cybercrime.
The chief minister approved the appointment of a head for the new unit, while district-level Online Crime Centers will also be established.
Officials were directed to ensure that no safe routes remain available for criminal groups within Punjab.
Measures were also ordered to restrict movement through unconventional provincial entry points. Approval was granted for installation of searchlights at provincial entry routes and the launch of drone surveillance. Authorities were instructed to ensure rooftop security monitoring at check posts.
Maryam Nawaz directed immediate steps for the procurement of the latest drone defense systems and ordered strict enforcement of measures to regulate drone usage.
She further instructed that combing operations continue without interruption to identify criminals and terrorists.
The meeting also reviewed the training and provision of modern security equipment to the RMP Anti-Riots Force for effective crowd management.
It was agreed that security SOPs for Youm-e-Hazrat Ali (AS) would be formulated in consultation with religious scholars.
The chief minister appreciated Provincial Minister Khawaja Salman Rafique and Lahore Police for timely handling of the situation in Lahore and other parts of Punjab. She also acknowledged the cooperation of religious scholars in maintaining law and order.
Maryam Nawaz emphasized that eliminating terrorism requires unified and proactive efforts.
She termed it alarming that a suicide attacker managed to enter Punjab through a checkpoint, adding that authorities cannot afford complacency.
She stressed that the nature of warfare has changed and the province must prepare accordingly, urging religious scholars to continue supporting efforts to maintain peace.
