Gul Plaza tragedy: Registrar SHC seeks ToR from Sindh Govt for judicial commission

According to the contents of the letter, the Interior Secretary has been asked to send the ToRs for the judicial commission to the Sindh High Court.
KARACHI (Dunya News) - In response to a letter from the Interior Secretary Sindh, the Registrar of the Sindh High Court (SHC) also sent a reply regarding to the establishment of a judicial commission to investigate the Gul Plaza tragedy.
On the directions of the Chief Justice, the Terms of Reference (ToRs) were sought for setting up the judicial commission. According to the contents of the letter, the Interior Secretary has been asked to send the ToRs for the judicial commission to the Sindh High Court.
In response to a letter from the Governor of Sindh, the Sindh High Court also sent a reply to the Governor’s Principal Secretary. The court stated that the Governor’s letter does not comply with the Supreme Court’s 2023 decision regarding inquiry commissions, and that approval of the request is not possible unless the legal procedure is followed.
In matters of public importance, the formal procedure for an inquiry is that the government appoints a judge or a legal expert.
Meanwhile, out of 79 people who lost their lives in the tragedy, the bodies of 69 have been handed over to their families. According to the Karachi Commissioner, DNA testing is being conducted on three of the remaining 10 bodies, while the relatives of seven victims are still being traced.
