Punjab government will expand its “Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar” housing program to include joint families, offering interest-free loans, land allocation, and easy installments for home construction.
LAHORE (Dunya News) — The Punjab government has announced the expansion of its flagship housing initiative, “Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar” (“My Roof, My Home”), now extending benefits to joint families across the province.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif said the program aims to preserve the centuries-old joint family system while promoting social development and harmony. Under the revised plan, joint families will be eligible for interest-free loans and easy installment plans to expand or build their homes.
A major target has been set to construct 160,000 homes by June 2026. For citizens without land, the government will provide plots along with interest-free loans.
So far, 1,534 plots have been approved for allocation under the “Apni Zameen, Apna Ghar” scheme. In the first phase, plots in Jhelum (194), Kasur (129), Faisalabad (84), and Lodhran (59) will be allocated through a lottery system.
At a special meeting chaired by the Chief Minister, officials reported that 18,80,081 users are registered in the housing program, with 10,66,559 applications received. Across Punjab, 67,197 homes have been completed while 53,843 are under construction.
The briefing noted that loans worth Rs164.66 billion have been disbursed with a recovery rate of 99 percent. The Chief Minister instructed authorities to release the second installment soon and prepare a policy to assist families in case of the death of a registered program beneficiary.
The expansion of the program is seen as a significant step to give citizens “a roof over their heads” while keeping the traditional family system intact.
