LAHORE (Dunya News) - The Lahore High Court directed the Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) to form a special team to investigate Nasir Bagh tree-cutting case.
Justice Shahid Karim issued the instructions while hearing petitions related to smog control. During proceedings, a member of the Judicial Commission informed the court that trees were relocated with the help of an NGO. However, the judge noted that 123 trees had reportedly been transplanted without PHA’s knowledge, adding that photographic evidence showed trees being cut.
“The cutting of trees must stop. This cannot continue,” Justice Karim remarked. He questioned the choice of Nasir Bagh, stating it was unclear why this location was selected for development.
The judge further commented that if people protest against development projects, authorities should guide them rather than isolate them. “Explain the benefits of the project. This is democracy, whatever shape it may be,” he added.
Justice Karim also praised the crackdown on heavy vehicles, calling it a positive step that had improved air quality. He urged the government to continue efforts, including weekend commercial restrictions and two-week winter vacations.
The court was informed that heavy transport owners had announced a strike against the crackdown. Justice Karim responded that the strike should not deter enforcement and suggested suspending licenses if necessary.
The court sought detailed reports from relevant departments at the next hearing and adjourned proceedings.
