ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) - Pakistan’s consumer price index (CPI) rose 9.2 percent year-on-year in July, data from the statistics bureau showed on Monday.
The July reading eased from 11.1 percent recorded in June but was more than double the 4.1 percent registered in the same month last year, according to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS). On a month-on-month basis, consumer prices rose 1.2 percent after declining 0.3 percent in June. Urban inflation stood at 8.7 percent year-on-year, while rural inflation was higher at 9.9 percent.
“CPI inflation General, increased by 9.2 percent on year-on-year basis in July 2026 as compared to an increase of 11.1 percent in the previous month and 4.1 percent in July 2025,” the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics said in its monthly price review.
“On month-on-month basis, it increased by 1.2 percent in July 2026 as compared to a decrease of 0.3 percent in the previous month and an increase of 2.9 percent in July 2025.”
Food and non-alcoholic beverages remained the largest contributor to annual inflation, rising 10.6 percent from a year earlier, the bureau said.
Transport costs increased 15.1 percent year-on-year, while communication prices climbed 13.6 percent. Housing, water, electricity, gas and fuels rose 7.1 percent.
Among major food items, urban prices for tomatoes surged 174.7 percent from a year earlier, while wheat prices rose 77.7 percent, onions 75.9 percent and wheat flour 67.6 percent. Sugar prices, by contrast, fell 21.0 percent year-on-year, while potatoes declined 34.4 percent.
The bureau also reported that the Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI), which tracks the prices of essential goods consumed by lower-income households, increased 12.0 percent year-on-year in July, while the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) rose 9.4 percent over the same period.
