Summary Indian Army colonel arrested by CBI in Kolkata over Rs 50 million bribery case linked to procurement tenders, triggering fresh concerns over corruption in defence ranks

KOLKATA (Dunya News) -  Allegations of corruption and bribery within the Indian Army have surfaced after a senior officer was arrested in a high-profile case involving procurement irregularities in Kolkata.

According to reports, India’s Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested an Army Ordnance Corps colonel in connection with a Rs50 million bribery case, exposing alleged misconduct within the military procurement system.

The officer, identified as Colonel Himanshu Bali of the Army Ordnance Corps under the Eastern Command in Kolkata, was allegedly involved in accepting bribes from a company based in Kanpur.

The report stated that Colonel Bali was taken into custody under the Prevention of Corruption Act from Kolkata and later transferred to Delhi for further investigation.

According to the FIR, the accused officer and other officials were allegedly involved in a coordinated scheme of awarding multiple tenders in exchange for large bribes.

Experts believe such cases highlight deeper concerns regarding corruption and administrative failures within Indian defence institutions, arguing that recurring incidents reflect systemic issues rather than isolated misconduct.

They further stated that rising irregularities and corruption allegations indicate internal challenges within the Indian armed forces, which may be contributing to institutional inefficiencies and growing concerns over governance and accountability.
