Summary President Barack Obama addressed Democratic Iowa Caucus voters from Washington.
President Barack Obama on Tuesday urged his supporters in Iowa to show the same determination they did when Obama used the state as a launching pad for his White House victory four years ago.Speaking to democratic Iowa supports via teleconference from Washington, Obama thanked them for their support during the 2008 electoral race and in the three years since. Its because of you that Ive had this extraordinary honor of the last three years of working to try to deliver on that change, and obviously at the time we didnt know how severe the economic crisis was going to be, we didnt fully appreciate at the time the worldwide magnitude of the financial crisis. But we knew, even then, that the middle class has been taking it for a long time. Folks who had been trying to get into the middle class found that the ladders that allowed for upward mobility had started to disintegrate for a lot of people. So we understood that we been fighting for was an America where everybody had a fair shot, everybody did their fair share, that responsibility was rewarded and that the game wasnt fixed. That it wasnt rigged, and that if people did the right thing and worked hard as so many families throughout Iowa and throughout the country, that they were going to be able to live out their piece of the American dream. Now we still got a lot of work to do but think about the change that was accomplished because of those caucuses four years ago, he said. This year the Democratic candidate -- Obama -- is already chosen, but the campaign wants supporters to turn out anyway as a sign of organizational support.Obama said that he was in some ways more optimistic this time around, but that work still remained to be done.In some ways Im actually more optimistic now than I was when I first ran. Because weve already seen change take place. And part of what 2012 is about is both reminding the American people of how far weve traveled and the concrete effects that some of our work has had in terms of making sure that people have health insurance or making sure our troops are coming home or making sure that young people are able to go to college. But part of it is also framing this larger debate about what kind of country were gonna leave for our children and our grandchildren, he said. The main message that were going to have in 2012 is that weve done a lot but weve got a lot more to do, and thats why we need another four years to get it all done, he added.Early returns among Obamas Republican Presidential competitors showed a tight three way-race between Mitt Romney, Ron Paul and Rick Santorum as voters met across the largely rural state on Tuesday to determine a challenger to the President.
