Top leaders of the country including President Pratibha Devisingh Patil, Vice-President Mohammad Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, chief of federal ruling Congress party Sonia Gandhi, and Lal Krishna Advani, senior leader of Indias main opposition Bharatiya Janata party (BJP), paid tribute to the Father of the Indian Constitution at a special event in the Indian Parliament.Born on April 14, 1891 in a lower-caste family in central Madhya Pradesh state, Ambedkar was an Indian jurist, scholar and a Buddhist revivalist.Overcoming numerous social and financial obstacles, Ambedkar became one of the first untouchables to obtain a college education in India.He went on to pursue higher studies in the United States and England, where he earned a law degree and multiple doctorates for his study and research in law, economics and political science.Ambedkar is also viewed as messiah for the marginalized Dalit section, which comprises socially and economically disadvantaged sections of Indias caste-orientated society.On August 29, 1947, Ambedkar was appointed as Chairman of the Constitution Drafting Committee, to write free Indias new Constitution.He died on December 06, 1956, and was posthumously honoured with Indias highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna, in 1990.
