Summary The World Bank will lend $172m to Bangladesh to expand its solar and other renewable power systems.

“The credit is an additional financing to ... help install solar power system to another 630,000 homes in rural areas where grid electricity is not economically feasible or hard to reach,” the bank said in a statement.“More than a million homes and shops in remote areas have installed solar home systems with support from the World Bank and other development partners,” said Ellen Goldstein, country director of the World Bank in Bangladesh.In 2009, the World Bank lent Bangladesh $130 million to install solar power systems in more than 300,000 homes.“The solar home systems have improved the quality of life of millions of people in Bangladesh and provided opportunities for new village enterprises,” Goldstein said. Only about one-third of rural households have access to grid electricity with about 16 million households yet to be electrified.
