Egypt: Nation annoyed over controversial emergency laws

Summary The controversial extension of Egypt's Emergency Law has sparked anger among political parties.

Egypts government reinstates the controversial Emergency Law, drawing the ire of activists who say the law has been used to stifle dissent in the past. The extension was announced after the storming of the Israeli embassy on September 9 and subsequent violent clashes between demonstrators and security forces in which three people were killed and more than 1,000 injured. But while the chaotic aftermath of the embassy storming was disavowed by many activists, the revival of the code that allows authorities wide powers of detention and transfer to military and other special courts has led to demands by protesters that the government reverse its decision. At a recent demonstration in Tahrir square, activist Julia Milad said she believed the authorities seem determined to undo what little progress Egypt has made towards freedom since the revolution.
