A sudden heavy rainstorm packing showers of hails ravaged part of Kashi Prefecture in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, injuring 14 people, killing 12 domestic animals, shattered 283 rooms of houses, battering cotton, corn, melons and other crops, according to local authorities.Areas affected included Kezilesu, Xiaawati, Yingmaili townships of Jiashi County in Kashi. The hails, with the biggest being 15mm in diameter, were showering for 25 minutes.Preliminary estimates showed that the system injured 14 people, killed 12 domestic animals, collapsed 37 animal sheds and damaged 283 rooms of houses. It also damaged crops on 9949.6 hectares in 56 villages, including 3990.13 hectares of cotton, 4061.7 hectares of corn, 376.1 hectares of muskmelon, 159.1 hectares of vegetables, and 1332.7 hectares of fruit. But no total value of losses was available.This was the worst natural disaster in the recent years for the area.The Kashi prefectural leaders took officials of agriculture, civil affairs, insurance, forestry and meteorological departments to the affected areas to carry out investigations and provide relief. The local government departments in the worst-hit Jiashi County swung into action, helping the disaster victim overcoming difficulties.
