In a bizarre event in Surat district of Indias western Gujarat state, locals noticed gas coming out near their houses and bubbles being formed in water, causing havoc among residents of the locality.The issue came to the notice of the elders when children playing in a ground noticed bubbles being formed in a nearby water pool and match sticks lighting up automatically when being brought near the ground.Tasleem Seikh, a local said that they were still clueless of the reason of the gas leakage and dinot have an idea till when the problem would persist, causing scare in the minds of the people.People are sacred because of the leakage of gas that has started coming out beneath the ground.Recently the National Institute of Hydrology had claimed that gas leakage from an Oil and Natural Gas Commission well had led to groundwater spurting in Olpad.A report by the institute claimed that the outer casing of the gas well got parted, which led to heavy leakage and later to water spurting.Shakila Shiekh, another local said that they have been facing a lot of problem, as they are scared to send out their children to play in the playground and tie their animals in open.We are facing this gas leakage problem since one month. Nobody is paying much attention towards this problem. This is a playground for children. Children while playing with matchsticks once observed that the matchstick started burning itself, and then we realized that gas was leaking from the ground. We tie our animals here and children play here but we have to stop all these activities now. People are very scared to live here, said Shakila.The officials who came to inspect did not give any concrete answer, saying that they would comment only after the report of the test comes out.Look as far as we have observed bubbles are coming out of the ground. There is a possibility that there might be filth under the ground leading to bubble formation. The authorities will soon come to a decision, said Patel, official of Oil and Natural Gas Commission of India.The Olpad area in Surat district is an industrial locality and this is for the second time in quick succession that the locals have faced such a problem.
