The Latin American presidents who make up UNASUR (Union of South American Nations) met in Lima, Peru, where they discussed regional issues including illicit drug trafficking.The meeting at the Inquisition Museum took place after the inauguration of leftist President Ollanta Humala, who prioritized regional integration and social inclusion on the agenda.Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos reiterated the importance of regional cooperation in the drug war.Drug trafficking is another epidemic, like poverty, where we all need to unite. No country by itself can combat drug trafficking. And I say that as one who comes from a country that is probably the one that has suffered the most in the planet because of this epidemic. Weve fought it at a very high cost, much blood has been shed in the fight against drug trafficking. Yet, its still present. Thats why all the countries must unite. Peru also has this problem. Thats why its a topic that will always be on our agenda, he said.Launched in 2008, UNASUR is a vehicle to achieve regional integration in a number of issues. It consists of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay and Venezuela.Paraguayan President Fernando Lugo and Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez did not attend because of health reasons.
