Summary India and South Korea have signed a civil nuclear cooperation deal.

India inked a civil nuclear cooperation deal with South Korea during the visit of President, Pratibha Patil in Seoul.The signing of the agreement paved the way for the Korean companies to participate in atomic power plant projects in the country. To meet the rising energy demands, India has relied on nuclear power generating plants and aims to build 40 such plants in the next twenty years.The accord signed by Srikumar Banerjee, a top bureaucrat in the Department of Atomic Energy and Kim Sung Hwan, Foreign Minister of the Republic of Korea, after Patil met with her South Korean counterpart Lee Myung-Bak.Seoul generates around 35 per cent of its electricity needs from 20 nuclear plants and is keen to export its technology to growing economy like New Delhi.Earlier, the Indian President visited the monument of first Indian Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore and laid floral wreaths on it.The Indian President is on a week-long visit of Korea and Mongolia.
