Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico was established in 1939 to create the first nuclear bomb.The facility houses the largest nuclear weapons arsenal in the US.Firefighters have been working to douse the flames of a fire that spread just inside the boundary of the lab.Plumes of smoke rising on the horizon have forced the evacuation of the some 12,000 residents of Los Alamos.Meanwhile, floodwater surrounded Nebraska nuclear power plant. A protective berm around the Fort Calhoun plant collapsed and floodwaters rushed toward the nuclear containment building. A new barrier will be erected. The officials say the plant remains safe.The plant, which is less than 20 miles north of Omaha, Nebraska has been shut down since April.
