India launches ferry service to Sri Lanka

Summary In a bid to boost tourism and trade, India has started a passenger ferry service to Sri Lanka.

Indias Shipping Minister GK Vasan inaugurated a passenger ferry service to Colombo from the port of Tuticorin at Thootukudi in southern state of Tamil Nadu.He termed this event as historic by recalling how the revolutionary freedom fighter VO Chidambaram had mooted this service over a century ago.VO Chidambaram started the Indias first passenger shipping service in 1907, which was later stopped by the colonial British government. The passenger liner named Scota Prince carried over 200 passengers in its first trip from Tuticorin Port to Colombo, capital city of Sri Lanka.An agent of the shipping company said the company would try to provide best facilities for its travellers.
