President Barack Obama is expected to announce today appointment of Army Gen Martin Dempsey as the new chairman joint chiefs of staff to replace the incumbent Admiral Mike Mullen who will retire in October. In picking Dempsey, Obama bypassed Gen James Cartwright who developed differences with Admiral Mike Mullen, and Defence Secretary Robert Gates over the increase in US forces in Afghanistan.Neither Gates nor Mullen endorsed Cartwright to be the new joint chiefs chairman, the official said. Cartwright is now expected to submit his retirement papers and will be replaced by air force chief of staff Gen Norton Schwartz.According to experts, Pentagon lobbies succeeded in elevating an army general to the rank of chairman joint chiefs of staff who is not interested in pulling out US troops from Afghanistan.
