Egypt announces opening of Gaza's Rafah crossing
Updated on

Summary Egypt has announced to open its border with the Gaza Strip.

According to Egypt, the move is aimed to ease restrictions on the Palestinian residents of Gaza, despite Israeli objections. It suggested a further policy shift since the ouster of President Hosni Mubarak, whose government co-operated with the Jewish state in enforcing a blockade on the Gaza Strip and has a 1979 peace treaty with Israel.“We in the Hamas movement welcome the opening of the Rafah crossing permanently and also the planned improvement of its facilities. We consider this step as showing how serious the Egyptian leadership is about ending the Israeli siege imposed on the Gaza Strip,” Palestinian residents said.
