MECCA (Reuters) - A Mecca-based Saudi security centre observed the movements of pilgrims at Islam’s holiest site on Tuesday (August 6), ahead of the annualhaj that sees millions of Muslims visit Mecca’s Grand Mosque.
Security personnel and civilian surveillance operatives at National Center for Security Operations (NCSO) 911 monitored the mosque, which officials said was to ensure the security of pilgrims.
A Saudi security official told Reuters that latest security systems had been implemented at the centre as Saudi Arabia braces for haj that begins on Friday (August 9).
Over 1,600,000 pilgrims had arrived in Saudi Arabia for the haj, according to the recent Saudi ministry of haj figures. The majority of them are residing in Mecca while others are staying in Medina, the Saudi ministry of haj said.
The Hajj is a journey every able-bodied Muslim who can afford it must perform once in a lifetime.
