Syrian troops carry out mass arrests in Damascus suburb

Summary Syrian troops have arrested more than 300 people in the town of Saqba just outside Damascus city.

Dozens of Syrian troops pressed a crackdown on seven weeks of unprecedented protests.Witnesses said that the security force personnel began the sweep in the hours of darkness. They said that the troops had lists of people they wanted and carried out house-to-house searches.The troops also set up roadblocks at which they made further arrests.The new arrests came after opposition activists vowed to press on with their revolution against the government of President Bashar al-Assad.The Syrian human rights group Insan said that as many as 8,000 people had been listed as in custody or missing since the protests began on March 15. It said that the civilian death toll now tops 607.
