Peru: Two people die in clashes over anti-mining protest

At least two people died in clashes between police and hundreds of activists demanding an end to plans to build a mine in southern Peru.Several local businesses and at least one private vehicle were torched in the protests, just days ahead of the presidential election.One victim died after being shot in the chest, according to medical personnel at Mollendo Hospital, where some victims were taken.Other victims were taken to nearby Arequipa Hospital, where the other victim died after being shot in the head.For two weeks, activists have protested against the proposed billion-dollar Tia Maria Southern Copper mining project.On Tuesday, the government said it was suspending the environmental impact study for six months in a bid to calm tensions.
