Summary The death toll has risen to more than 75 after an earthquake struck Christchurch, New Zealand. The rescue operation is still ongoing and teams are searching for people trapped.
It was the second strong quake in five months to hit Christchurch, a city of almost 4,000,000 people. About 120 survivors had been pulled from the rubble but the death toll was expected to rise. Authorities said they had formally identified 50 dead but more bodies were in collapsed buildings and crushed cars. Emergency shelters were erected in schools and at a race course and hundreds spent the night in those shelters.
