Summary Peru police and army have started a joint operation against the illegal mining along the banks of Amazon River in Madre de Dios region.

Illegal miners extract some 17 to 18 maund gold, valued around $800 millions, annually from the mines. The Peruvian minister for environment said that illegal mining yields extraordinary profit that is why people indulged in this illegal business.The defense minister said that he had evidence that Chinese mafia was behind the illegal mining.
