Summary Today the whole world is celebrating Valentines Day and flowers are being exchanged among each other. Italian couples flocked to the tomb of St Valentine to reconfirm their love bond on the eve of the annual commemoration of lovers' day.
The church in Terni, central Italy holds the remains of the saint believed to be the patron of lovers. A celebratory mass is held annually on the Sunday before Valentines Day at the church. The occasion is especially dedicated to couples planning to marry within the year and attracted around 200 couples. There are many versions of the history of Valentines Day and the role the saint had in preserving the love of couples, but most believe that Valentine was a priest that lived in the third century in Terni. Saint Valentine is believed to have been martyred on 14th February, which today marks the day of love in the annual calendar and still draws scores of visitors seeking his blessings.
