Summary Cultural vigilante in India's central Madhya Pradesh state worshipped batons in provincial capital Bhopal on Saturday to protest the upcoming Valentine's Day. The protesters, under the banner of Sanskriti Bachao Manch (Save Culture Organisation), said the protest was against a western culture being imposed on the society.
We are protesting Valentine Day, because there is no description of Valentine Day in Indian culture. Love can be celebrated all 365 days of the year, we are protesting the domination of corrosive western culture. By worshipping batons we urge to the youth to boycott this and gauge that the western culture must not influence the Indian culture, said Chandrashekhar Tiwari, member of the organisation. He threatened the hotel owners against organising any special packages to lure the youth. We request the administration that they should stop the organizing of special events by the hotels on this occasion. They should keep an eye on those who spread obscenity in the parks, which is against the Indian culture. The administration should be wary about the happenings that mars the Indian culture, added Tiwari.Police maintained that the celebration was a personal choice of individuals and that action would be taken against those who try to take law into their own hands. Valentines Day is celebrated every year on February 14 in remembrance of St. Valentine.
