Transferring power to Vice President not sufficient for Egypt: Obama
Updated on

Summary US President Obama said that it is not sufficient to just transfer powers to Vice President in Egypt; government must clarify the major political changes in the system.

The Obama administration scrambled to respond Thursday to an increasingly uncertain situation in Egypt after President Hosni Mubarak said he would transfer power to his vice president but would not relinquish his title. The Egyptian people have been told that there was a transition of authority, but it is not yet clear that this transition is immediate, meaningful or sufficient, US President Obama said. Too many Egyptians remain unconvinced that the government is serious about a genuine transition to democracy, and it is the responsibility of the government to speak clearly to the Egyptian people and the world. Obama also said that Egypt needs to define a clear path of democracy.
