Italy: protest against Silvio Berlusconi intensifies
Updated on

Summary The protest against Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has been intensified as the Romans woke up to find statues in landmark spots of the Italian capital wearing signs with messages against Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.

Activists from the None Shall Sleep group carried out the night-time raid and by dawn, more than 150 statues wore signs expressing indignation towards Berlusconi and inviting people to rise in protest. Berlusconi has denied any wrongdoing and says he is being persecuted by politically-motivated magistrates. Growing numbers of protests are springing up around Italy, often organised spontaneously on the Internet, although polls show that so far Berlusconi s conservative voter base has largely shrugged off the affair.
