Summary At least 20 people have been killed in fighting that erupted between Sudanese troops when some refused to redeploy ahead of south Sudan becoming an independent nation, Sudanese military officials said.
The fighting started Thursday in the town of Malakal when part of a military unit refused to hand over the heavy weapons to be sent to the north.At least 24 people were also wounded in the fighting.The fighting comes as south Sudan prepares to become independent following a referendum last month that was part of a 2005 peace agreement to end a civil war between the north and south.
