Summary The squad has swung into action, rounding up whoever found in the vicinity of a girl’s college.
UTTAR PRADESH (Web Desk) – In a campaign aimed at ensuring safety of women, especially young girls, policemen across 11 districts of Uttar Pradesh have hit the streets with vigor, following up on the newly sworn-in Chief Minister Aditya Nath Yogi’s election pledge to rid public places of eve-teasers.
Special squads comprising cops from local police stations kept a vigil at markets, malls, schools, colleges, coaching centres, parks and other crowded places to see if women were being harassed.

On Wednesday, at least 15 were detained across the city. Ten of them turned out to be relatives or friends of girl students taking exams and were freed.
Five were taken to the police station for interrogation.

The idea of “anti-Romeo” squads was first introduced in Gujarat in the late 1990s when Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was in power but the campaign later fizzled out in a short span of time.
