More ground troops needed in Afghanistan, says U.S. General

WEB DESK (Dunya News) – The head of the U.S. military’s Central Command Joseph Votel has said that more ground troops will be needed by the US Army in fight against Taliban and other insurgent groups within Afghanistan.

General Joseph Votel revealed this while talking to the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee on March 9.

"I do believe it will involve additional forces to ensure that we can make the advise-and-assist mission more effective," he said.

General Joseph Votel also expressed in front of the Senate Armed Forces Committee that he was currently working on a new strategy in order to break the war out of a stalemate.

The United States has already been fighting in Afghanistan for the last 16 years which makes it the already longest-ever war in the country’s history.

The head of the U.S. military’s Central Command also revealed that the reinforcing US troops in the country is a matter of discussion between the US military and Defence Secretary Jim Mattis.

At least, half of the 13,300 troops in Afghanistan are Americans that assists the Afghan forces in a war against the Taliban and other Islamist militants.
