Summary In-laws demanded 170,000 IR as dowry, father of bride failed due to cancellation of currency notes

NEW DELHI: (Web Desk) – A newlywed bride was on Monday murdered by the in-laws as her father failed to provide the dowry money of Indian Rupee (IR) 170,000. The father couldn’t arrange the money due to the cancellation of the currency notes by Modi government.

The shocking incident took place in Indian state of Orissa. According to police, the murdered woman, Prabhati, belonged to Ranjipur village. She had been married to Lakshmi Nahik, belonging to the same village, on November 9. The in-laws had demanded IR 170,000 from Prabhati’s father as dowry, which he accepted. But due to the cancellation of currency notes in India, he failed to fulfil his promise.

According to Indian media, the father of the bride tried to give the in-laws the old currency notes on the wedding day but they refused to accept those notes and said that they must be paid the amount in the new currency notes.

Prabhati’s parents told the parents that she had been murdered by her in-laws due to their failure to pay the money. They demanded that the culprits must be arrested and brought to justice. Police registered the case against the accused upon Prabhati’s parents’ request.
