A five-storey residential building collapsed in Lalita Park in New Delhi's Laxmi Nagar area on Monday evening, killing at least 42 people.More than 50 people were injured when the building in the eastern area of the city caved in and many are still feared to be trapped inside, the agency said, citing a senior police official. Delhi's health minister Kiran Walia told PTI: 42 people have been killed in the incident. Rescuers helped by local residents battled to pull people from the debris of the building, surrounded by concrete slabs and rubble. The city's finance minister A. K. Walia told the foundations of the building could have been weakened by flooding during monsoon rains.Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said the construction of the building would be investigated, the agency reported. The scale of the tragedy is unprecedented. I don't think such a tragedy has taken place in Delhi in the recent past, she said. An adjoining building is also at risk of collapse, PTI said, quoting unnamed police officials.
