SANAA (AFP) - Yemen s Shiite rebels have agreed to respond "positively" to efforts to "end the suffering", their television channel said on Sunday in a clear reference to a Saudi-proposed truce.

The rebels  politburo expressed "readiness to deal positively with any efforts, calls or measures that would help end the suffering," Al-Massirah television said.

It welcomed "efforts by sisterly and friendly countries to end the aggression and the suffering of the Yemeni people."

That was an apparent reference to Russia, which put a ceasefire proposal to the UN Security Council earlier this month.

That proposal failed to win the backing of fellow council members but on Friday Saudi Arabia offered five-day pause in the bombing campaign it has led in support of exiled President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi provided the rebels reciprocated.

The proposed truce, which would start from Tuesday, is backed by Washington, which has provided logistical support for its Arab ally but not carried out air strikes.
