MEXICO CITY (AP) - A gas tanker exploded in the Mexico City suburb of Ecatepec early Tuesday, killing at least eighteen people and injuring 13.

The Citizen Safety Department of Mexico State said the figures were preliminary and could rise.

Images on the Televisa network showed the early morning blast destroying at least a half-dozen surrounding buildings and cars and showed the burned-out hull of a van.

A giant plume of smoke rose over the area after the explosion around 5 a.m. Tuesday local time.

Mexican media reported that the explosion could have been caused by a crash between the tanker and a passenger bus.

The explosion closed the highway between Mexico City and Pachuca.
