Summary The surviving animals were taken in by the rescue services.
MARSEILLE (AFP) - Police and animal rescue services said Friday they found malnourished cats and dogs in a flat in Marseille, as well as the dead bodies of two dogs that had been burned.
Three undernourished dogs and cats and a hedgehog were found cowering in "maladapted" cages in the flat, and the burned bodies were uncovered in a bin, a police source said.
A woman aged around 20 was questioned on suspicion of cruelty to animals, but subsequently released.
The animals had no food or water and the cats were "living in their own excrement", said the rescue services.
The woman "admitted to having burned the dogs, but not to having killed them. She froze the cadavers, but later defrosted them in order to burn them and ‘release their souls’," a police source said.
The surviving animals were taken in by the rescue services, who vowed to prosecute "those responsible for this cruelty and barbarism".
