Summary Driver told public safety officer he had accidentally hit the deer and thought it was dead.

MICHIGAN (Web Desk) -A public safety officer checking a suspicious car parked behind a southwestern Michigan motel early Tuesday was more than a little surprised when a deer climbed out of the trunk, stumbled onto the road and bolted into nearby woods.

The driver told Kalamazoo public safety officer David Miller that he accidentally hit the deer on the road and, thinking he had killed it, was taking it home for his family to eat.

Michigan motorists who hit deer are allowed to keep the meat, but must report the incident and acquire a state deer kill permit.

Miller asked if he could inspect the deer to see if it had been properly tagged and accounted for, and the man agreed.

Squad car dashboard camera footage shows Miller opening the trunk, then quickly trying to close it when he spots the live deer.

The animal escapes from the trunk, rear first, stumbles and rolls, then dashes off.

Fellow Kalamazoo officer Lt. Stacey Geik said the collision probably just stunned the deer.
