(Web Desk) - An elephant seal has stopped traffic in a resort in Brazil after going for a walkabout in the main shopping street.

The animal, which is estimated to weigh more than a half ton, took a leisurely stroll through Balneario Camboriu, blocking traffic for more than an hour.

The near 10 foot long sea creature waddled out of the Atlantic and headed up the beach straight for the busy Avenida Atlantica in the town in the southern Brazilian state of Santa Catarina.

Police officers and fire-fighters splashed water on the animal, which politely used the crossing, to keep it wet during its unexpected adventure as shoppers and tourists took pictures and videos.
