A Saudi man divorced his bride just five minutes after he married her, citing the high dowry imposed by her father on him.The Moslem scholar who performed the marriage rituals at the groom’s house has just taken the signatures of the couple when the 20-year-old groom asked him to cancel the contract immediately, a newspaper said.Kabar Arabic language daily said the unnamed groom had been under strong pressure by the father of the 18-year-old bride to agree to paySR77,000 (Dh76,000) as dowry (money paid by the groom to the bride’s parents under Islamic law).“Five minutes after the marriage contract was done, the groom asked the Sheikh to cancel the marriage as guests looked in amazement,” the paper said in a report from the western town of Taif.“He told the guests that he decided to cancel the marriage because he believed that the dowry was too high…his father tried to dissuade him but he went ahead and divorced the bride.”
