Summary The last wallaby at a zoo in southern Romania was found dead in its enclosure Tuesday.
It is suspected that it might have been mauled to death by wild dogs, said the director of the park where the zoo is located.Zoo staff saw a pack of wild dogs next to the dead wallaby and they had blood on their noses, said Bogdan Toader. The accident is blamed on staffing problems at the zoo in the city of Ploiesti, about 50 kilometres (30 miles) north of the capital Bucharest.A lack of security staff to survey the enclosures is believed to have enabled the dogs to jump over the barrier to the wallabys enclosure. The mate of the dead wallaby was bitten to death by a rat earlier this year.Wallabies are marsupials, closely related to kangaroos, that grow to an average height of 30 to 104 centimetres (12 to 41 inches).
