SA president humbled after ex-wifes election as AU leader

Summary South African President Jacob Zuma was humbled after his ex-wife Dlamini-Zuma won AU top job.

Zuma was humbled by the confidence that Africa has showed in the Southern Africa candidate, his office said.With this appointment, Dr Dlamini-Zuma, who has served our country with distinction, becomes the servant of the continent, Zuma said in a statement.The first woman to head the continental blocs executive commission beat incumbent Jean Ping of Gabon in a closely fought election over several rounds of voting late Sunday at the AU summit in Addis Ababa.Her election followed months of lobbying from her government, and rested strongly on the support of the 15-member Southern African Development Community.I would like to thank all SADC member-states as well as the entire leadership of the AU for all their hard work and ensuring a successful election, Zuma said.South Africa would make the necessary adjustment to enable Dr Dlamini-Zuma to commence her new duties as soon as possible, his office said.
