Spotify to add 'AI Persona' badges to AI-generated artist profiles

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - Spotify will begin labeling certain AI-generated artist profiles with “AI Persona” badges from mid-September, as the music streaming platform moves to give listeners greater transparency about who—or what—is behind the music.

The company said Tuesday that the new labels are aimed at addressing concerns over artist profiles that appear to represent real people but are instead built around AI-generated personas.

The badges will appear in several places across Spotify, including banners and About sections on artist profiles, Search results and track rows within playlists. Beginning Tuesday, artists will also be able to disclose through Spotify for Artists that their profile represents an AI Persona.

Spotify said it will separately review artist profiles whose public identities appear to feature photorealistic AI-generated imagery. If the platform’s review team flags a profile, the artist will be notified and given the opportunity to disclose that it is an AI Persona or appeal the decision.

Listeners will be able to distinguish between profiles that have voluntarily identified themselves as AI Personas and those identified through Spotify’s own review process.

The company also said AI Persona profiles will be excluded from editorial and algorithmic recommendations by default. However, those profiles can still appear in recommendations for users who already follow the artists.

Spotify stressed that the new badge will be based on an artist’s public identity rather than how the music itself was created. This means the label is intended to identify AI-generated or AI-represented artist personas, rather than classify songs according to whether AI tools were used during their production.

The move comes as AI-generated music and digital artist identities become increasingly common across streaming platforms, raising questions about transparency, authenticity and how listeners should understand the artists they discover online.
