The Diabetes Village, a hospital cum health resort in southern Indias Coimbatore city, introduces the concept of a water gym to help diabetics manage their fitness better.Frequent exercise and good fitness being essential in the fight against diabetes, a health resort in Coimbatore city of south Indias Tamil Nadu state has introduced water exercises for patients of the disease.Diabetics are trained to exercise in a swimming pool, in an environment where the buoyancy of water releases pressure on the joints and exercise becomes more convenient.Speaking from the premises of the Coimbatore Diabetes Foundations Diabetes Village on Saturday (November 12), chief diabetologist Dr V Sekar said that fitness programmes had been prepared to cater to the individual needs of visitors to the resort.The Diabetes Village also has detailed diagnostic and diet related charts on display for the benefit of visitors, showing them symptoms of the disease and preventive measures against it.Diabetics who were following the exercise programmes at the Diabetes Village were appreciative of the benefits to their fitness.World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that more than 346 million people worldwide have diabetes.A sedentary lifestyle and lack of physical exercise, apart from the growing prevalence of calorie-rich junk food, has fuelled the spread of this disease across people of all age groups.Doctors insist that preventive measures at the level of diet and exercise are very effective in helping people avoid the disease and shield patients from its adverse impacts.The World Diabetes Day is celebrated internationally on November 14 each year.
