Summary Fifteen people have died and 84 have been sickened after eating cantaloupes infected with listeria.
The source of the United States’ worst foodborne disease outbreak in more than a decade has been traced to Jensen Farms, a family-owned operation, and a voluntary recall was issued two weeks ago. However, investigators are still trying to figure out how the whole melons became contaminated, in what has been described as the first known outbreak of listeria in cantaloupes. On Wednesday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration warned that cases were sure to mount because of the long incubation period of the unusual bacterium. People can become sick up to two months after consuming a tainted product.Listeriosis is particularly dangerous to the elderly, those with weakened immune systems and pregnant women because it can cause miscarriage or stillbirth.
