The American Sociological Association has observed a latest research suggesting that both marriage and divorce have a significant effect on body mass index (BMI) and therefore can trigger weight gain. To conclude the findings, researchers have analyzed around 10,071 people and concluded that newly-married women are at a greatest risk of weight gains.During the study course, experts tracked people from 1986 to 2008, and monitored changes in BMI - a weight/height ratio measurement, in association with their and marital status. Consequently, they compared the BMI of married, single and divorced people.In addition, the survey has pinpointed that marriage has increased the risk of weight gain by 33%, around three point increase in BMI whereas newly-divorced women were found to have 22% increased risk of small weight gain.On the other hand, men were roughly 28% likely to experience slight gain after marriage and 21% after death. While commenting on the findings, the lead study author, Dmitry Tumin, said that marriage promotes weight gain to some extent, particularly for women.These are significant changes in someones life. It can change their living situation and the types of food they eat, Added Helen Riley at the British Nutrition Foundation charity. But different people deal with it in different ways and it can be positive for some people.
