Autism may be linked to environment

Summary Environmental factors may play a larger role in triggering autism than was previously thought.

A new study suggests that environmental factors may play a larger role in triggering autism than was previously thought. The study shows a need to accept that we have to go down the route of environment and genetics when it comes to studying the causes of autism. The researchers found out that the genes twins can increase the risk of getting autism by about 38%, but the environment twins in the womb and immediately after birth may increase the risk even more suggesting that the environment may play a larger role than previously thought.Mothers used to be blamed for being too cold towards their children when autism first was identified but genetics were believed to be a major culprit later on. In recent years, some scientists have been saying that there has to be something else triggering autism in genetically susceptible children which maybe environment. Study was not designed to determine which specific environmental factors are at play, therefore the researchers cannot pinpoint which issues add to the autism risk.
