Summary

The Nonlife Zoo exhibit is a visual representation of the damages human beings are imposing on animal life. The exhibit is a creation of two Asian artists who call themselves Biaugust in collaboration with a Los Angeles design house MollaSpace and its owner, Jeff Lui. These artists have created an imaginary world in which stuffed animals with skull faces stand together in a form of protest against animal abuse and cruelty. The project came about through the increasing awareness of animal cruelty in Taiwan as well as the increase in animal deaths and extinction. The artists hope to bring attention to animal rights issues and the intricate relationship that exists between humans and animals. The idea is to raise awareness on animal preservation in hope to improve our social responsibility to our environment said artist Jeff Lui. The stuffed animals in the exhibit come in different sizes, from hand-held animals to large sized dolls. All of the stuffed animals have their facial features replaced with skull-like features. Additionally, all animals stand on their hind legs, in representation of their co-existence with humans. The exhibit is currently housed in the pop-up shop space of Royal-T, a Los Angeles cafe and art space, and will be open until the 23rd of August. Artist and designer Jeff Lui will also be moving the exhibit to San Francisco and possibly on to New York.
