Summary

The largest group of mummies ever assembled in one collection will be touring the United States for three years. The first stop will be the California Science Center in Los Angeles. On Wednesday, the media got a special preview of the Mummies of the World exhibition going on public display starting Thursday. The collection features 150 specimens of human and animal remains and related artifacts from across the globe. American Exhibitions, Inc. is the company in charge of putting the pieces on display. People will get to see a collection never before assembled. What is also unique is the collection comes from approximately 20 institutions in over seven countries in Europe. This exhibit is truly unique because it brings mummies and associated artifacts from five regions of the world, and it really helps people understand that mummies don't only come from Egypt. Of course, there are Egyptian mummies, and they've been studied and promoted. But the tradition of mummifying your dead is practiced by many cultures of the world at different points in time, CEO of American Exhibitions, Inc. Marc Corwin briefly commented. Mummies from South America, Europe, Asia, Oceania and Egypt are represented in this exhibit. Curators say the exhibit is groundbreaking because it shows how science can shed light on the historical and cultural record of society. Scientists are also using medical imaging technologies such as CAT-scans as non-invasive techniques to examine mummies.
