India: 4th Tiger killed in a month

Summary

2010 may be the Year of the Golden Tiger, but it is not being reflected in India, where four tigers have been found dead in as many weeks in the Jim Corbett National Park. The park, which is located in the north Indian state of Uttarakhand, is spread over 521 square kilometres and boasts of the world's largest tiger population , with a recent census finding that one tiger inhabited every eight kilometres. Officials, however, claimed the latest death may be due to overcrowding, which could have led to territorial disputes. I believe the death we have seen today could be a case of poisoning, but we are still to receive the results of the post-mortem report. The latest death comes just days after the big cat topped the World Wide Fund for Nature's Annual List of Ten Species to Watch. Park officials estimate there are about 3,700 tigers left in the country, although some environment groups put the number at fewer than 2,000.
