Summary Great Britain's men's 5000m world champion Mo Farah was named European male athlete of the year.

The 28-year-old Somalia-born star -- who also won silver in the 10,000 metres at the world championships in August -- won the award ahead of last years winner Christophe Lemaitre of France.Russias 800m world champion Mariya Savinova of Russia was named female athlete of the year.Farahs decision to go to the United States to train this year for the world championships was rewarded with his medals as he became the first European athlete to win a global 5000m title since the subsequently disgraced German Dieter Baumann won the 1992 Olympics crown.Farah, European champion at both 5000 and 10000m, will receive his award along with Savinova at the ceremony in Spain on October 15.
